Day 1: Saturday, August 8th — Dunkirk to Oostende

Route: Dunkirk Ferry Terminal (France) to Oostende (Belgium)

  • Distance: 70 km

  • Difficulty: Intermediate (Flat coastal riding)

  • Highlights & Route Details:

    • Ferry Crossing: Meet at 6:30 AM at the Dover Terminal. The DFDS ferry departs at 8:00 AM for a 2-hour crossing.

    • The Ride Begins: Roll directly from the Dunkirk Ferry Terminal (), heading northeast along the North Sea coastline.

    • Border Crossing & Lunch: Cycle along the quiet Canal de Furnes into Belgium for a beachside lunch in the resort town of De Panne.

    • Flat Coastal Cruise: Enjoy a fast, flat coastal cruise on dedicated paths with a fresh sea breeze guiding you to Oostende.

📍 Sights to See Along the Way:

  • Malo-les-Bains (Dunkirk Beach): Before leaving France, ride past the stunning wide beaches that served as the backdrop for the historic 1940 WWII Allied evacuation.

  • The Westhoek Nature Reserve (De Panne): Known as the “Sahara of Flanders,” this massive, shifting coastal dune system right on the French-Belgian border is a gorgeous, otherworldly ecosystem to spot.

  • Ganzepoot Sluice Dock (Nieuwpoort): A crucial historical stop. This is the massive lock complex where Belgian forces famously opened the gates in 1914 to flood the surrounding plains, halting the advancing German army in WWI. Look out for the imposing King Albert I Monument standing high above the water.

  • Street Art by Case Maclaim (Oostende Entry): As we transition from coastal paths into our overnight stop, our route passes a world-class, hyper-realistic mural by German street artist Case Maclaim (), painted as part of Oostende’s famous The Crystal Ship public art festival.

  • Evening Plans: After checking in, opt for a quick 20-minute train ride to Bruges to experience its fairytale medieval streets, historic canals, and famous chocolate shops lit up at night.

Day 2: Sunday, August 9th — Oostende to Ghent (Ghent Day!)

Route: Oostende to Ghent via Bruges

  • Distance: 67 km

  • Difficulty: Intermediate (Flat canal paths to keep your legs fresh!)

  • Highlights & Route Details:

    • Morning Roll-Out: We gather at Wapenplein Square (), the vibrant heart of historic Oostende, before heading inland.

    • Bruges Exploration: Cycle directly to Bruges along the canal, taking plenty of time to explore its medieval heart in the daytime and fuel up on local food.

    • Hinterland & Rail-Trails: Pedal out of Bruges along a historic converted railway path, transitioning to quiet pastures on flat cycle routes flanked by rich regional flora and fauna.

    • Afternoon Arrival: Reach Ghent via the southern node network, check into our accommodation, and freshen up for our evening plans.

📍 Sights to See Along the Way:

  • Vaartdijk Zuid Canal Path: Leaving Oostende, we ride along the southern bank of the Plassendale Canal on this peaceful, tree-lined path ().

  • Bruges Historic Centre & Old Civil Registry (UNESCO): Park your bikes near the Grote Markt to admire the medieval Belfry. Just off the market square on the Burg, admire the Old Civil Registry (Oude Griffie, ), an architectural Renaissance masterpiece dating back to 1537, adorned with striking gold statues.

  • Old Maldegem–Steenbrugge Railway Embankment (Lijn 58): Enjoy a beautifully smooth, traffic-free ride on this decommissioned railway line () that has been turned into a premier green cycle corridor.

  • Susel Railway Gravel Path: A short, adventurous gravel transition sector () running along a quiet rural segment of the historical railway line, perfect for a brief break from the asphalt.

  • Flemish Node Network ‘Junction 6’: We will safely navigate the final approaches to Ghent using the local signposted cycling node system (Fietsknooppunten), linking through Junction 6 () directly onto Ghent’s pedestrian-friendly urban paths.

  • Kasteel van Ooidonk (Slight detour near Deinze): If you fancy a tiny look at regional architecture, keep an eye out for signs pointing to this breathtaking, moated Renaissance castle surrounded by water.

🚶‍♂️ Evening Activity: Private Guided Walking Tour of Ghent

We have privately hired a highly recommended local guide for an interactive, personalized walking tour of this stunning, pedestrianized medieval city.

  • Time: Sunday Evening (Approx. 5:30 PM / 6:00 PM - precise time confirmed in our WhatsApp group).

  • Duration: 1.5 Hours

  • Cost: £18 per person (Optional, but highly recommended!)

  • RSVP Form: Ghent Tour Sign-up Form (Please complete even if you cannot attend so we can finalize numbers).

🍽️ Group Sunday Dinner

  • Time: Immediately following the walking tour.

  • Location: A fantastic local restaurant hand-picked by our tour guide, where we will sit down together to enjoy traditional Flemish cuisine (like Flemish beef stew/stoverij or local beers) in a cozy atmosphere.

Day 3: Monday, August 10th — Ghent to Ypres

Route: Ghent to Ypres

  • Distance: 76 km

  • Difficulty: Challenging (Longest day, moving inland)

  • Highlights & Route Details:

    • Traffic-Free Riding: Leave Ghent along the Scheldt and Leie river corridors, utilizing Flanders’ legendary, car-free cycleways.

    • Flanders Fields Memorials: In the afternoon, we ride deep into the historic Ypres Salient battlefields. Stopping to pay our respects at these monuments is consistently praised by riders as the most profound and moving part of the entire tour.

📍 Sights to See Along the Way:

  • The Broel Towers (Kortrijk): If our route takes us through Kortrijk, we will pass these iconic, twin 14th-century limestone towers flanking the river Leie—some of the only surviving remnants of the city’s medieval fortifications.

  • Tyne Cot Cemetery (Passchendaele): The largest Commonwealth military cemetery in the world. Its sheer scale, neat white headstones, and sweeping view over the rolling fields leave an unforgettable, solemn impression.

  • Langemark German Military Cemetery: A somber contrast to Tyne Cot. Shaded by tall oak trees, this collective burial site houses over 44,000 German soldiers and offers a quiet, reflective look at the tragedy of the Great War.

  • Essex Farm Cemetery (Boezinge): This is the exact site where Canadian surgeon John McCrae wrote the world-famous poem “In Flanders Fields” in 1915 after losing a close friend.

  • Evening Plans: Group check-in and evening relaxation in the historic city of Ypres. At 8:00 PM sharp, we highly recommend walking to the Menin Gate to witness the Last Post Ceremony, a daily bugle tribute to missing Allied soldiers that has been played every single night since 1928 (except during WWII).

Day 4: Tuesday, August 11th — Ypres to Dunkirk

Route: Ypres to Dunkirk Ferry Terminal (France)

  • Distance: 50 km

  • Difficulty: Easy (Leisurely recovery ride)

  • Highlights & Route Details:

    • Flemish Countryside: Enjoy a flat, scenic ride through quiet farming lanes, hop fields, and wide-open country.

    • Return to France: Cross the border back into coastal France, tracing historic canals back to the English Channel.

    • Departure Logistics: Arrive at the Dunkirk ferry terminal by 4:00 PM. Our ferry departs at 6:00 PM, arriving back in Dover at 7:00 PM (UK Time).

📍 Sights to See Along the Way:

  • Poperinge (The Capital of Hops): Cycle through Belgium’s premier hop-growing region. You will see towering hop-wire fields lining the roads. Poperinge is also home to Talbot House, an authentic “Everyman’s Club” that provided a rare rest and recreation sanctuary for soldiers of all ranks during WWI.

  • Sint-Sixtus Abbey of Westvleteren: A must-stop for beer lovers! Just north of our route lies the abbey that brews the legendary Westvleteren Trappist Beer (often rated the best beer in the world). Stop at their official visitor centre café, In de Vrede, to taste it fresh—this is the only place in the world where the monks officially allow their beer to be sold directly to the public for immediate consumption!

  • Bergues (France): Just before reaching Dunkirk, we will cycle through this incredibly beautiful, historic walled town. Encircled by star-shaped, medieval ramparts designed by the famous military engineer Vauban, Bergues features a beautiful belfry and medieval canals. From here, a flat 8 km towpath along the Canal de Bergues takes us directly and safely into Dunkirk.

🧼 Quick Hotel Wash Strategy

Rinsing outer lycra and skipping the heavy foam pad is a classic touring trick. Padded chamois inserts hold a surprising amount of water and rarely dry overnight in hotel rooms, whereas thin exterior lycra and synthetic polyester tees dry completely in just a few hours.

  • The Outer Rinse: Quick-wash the polyester tees and outer bib/short fabric in the sink using hotel soap or body wash.

  • Towel Roll Technique: Lay washed items on a dry hotel bath towel, roll it tightly into a sausage, and step on it to extract 90% of the moisture before hanging.

  • Drying Setup: Hang them near a window or under an air vent; light polyester and thin lycra will easily dry overnight.
